LET'S ACT WHILE WE CAN
IS YOUR WATER CLEAN
- Our third activity in Athens - Greece hosted by 2nd Protypo Gymnasio Athinon
"Water is Life"
The aquatic environment plays an extremely important role in the existence of life on Earth. However, aquatic ecosystems are directly threatened by ever-increasing pollution, climate change and loss of biodiversity, making it more than necessary
to monitor them continuously and in detail. Until recently, water quality monitoring was dealt with periodic sampling, where weather or other conditions made this possible. Wastewater discharge, contamination of surface water and perdurable
waste materials disposed of into the sea are creating problems that require urgent solutions. The U-DATinos team of the 2nd Standard Gymnasium of Athens (the U comes from the word Ubiquitous, the DAT from the word Data, and the name of the U-DATinos team refers to the Greek word HYDATINOS), will be in charge to design and put into operation an automated device based on Internet of Things (IoT) technology to monitor the physico-chemical variables of a lake or a river and continuously control the water quality. The project aims to motivate and engage students to seek andacquire knowledge, skills and practices through design challenge and practice in problem solving techniques.
The development of an automated system by students, responding to the challenge of water quality monitoring, is feasible by using materials that are easy to use and have relatively low cost. For this purpose, the Greek team will use the Arduino digital platform in which will be connected a number of sensors to measure temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, TDS (total dissolved solids), and electrical conductivity. Finally, the collection, storage and analysis of the live data streaming in the cloud will be done through the ThingSpeak platform.
Then students will be able to choose the location where they will place the automated device to take measurements of physico-chemical parameters in an aquatic environment.
